Windows plays a notification sound but nothing shows? How to find the app
You heard the notification chime, but nothing is on screen. Here's how to find out which app it came from.
Check the notification center first
Press Windows key + N to open the notification center. A notification from around the time of the sound is likely the source.
If "Show notification banners" is off for an app but sound is on, you hear the sound without a banner, and the notification goes to the notification center. In Settings > System > Notifications > Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app to switch banners and sounds separately.
If it isn't in the notification center either
- The app removed its own notification right away
- "Show notifications in notification center" is off for the app
- The app doesn't use Windows notifications and plays its own sound or shows its own window
In these cases, Windows' settings and notification center have no way to check afterwards.
Find it next time
If you can't find the source, recording every notification lets you pin it down by time the next time it happens.
NotiRewind saves the notifications that reach the notification center on your PC, with the time and the app that sent them. Even a notification that is removed quickly stays in the history if it was saved in time.
Notifications removed immediately after they arrive, and sounds from apps that don't use Windows notifications, can't be saved.
