Windows 11 notifications disappear too fast? Make them stay longer

Updated:

Notification banners in the corner of the screen disappear after a few seconds by default. If you can't finish reading them, you can make them stay longer.

Change the time in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects
  2. Choose a longer time for Dismiss notifications after this amount of time

Microsoft describes this setting in Make it easier to focus on tasks.

In Windows 10, the same setting is in Settings > Ease of Access > Display.

Banner time and notification center time are different

This setting only changes how long a banner stays on screen. It doesn't change how long notifications stay in the notification center.

A notification stays in the notification center for 3 days unless the app sets a shorter time, and never longer (Microsoft Learn). Apps can also remove their own notifications.

When an app shows no banner

If "Show notification banners" is off for an app, its notifications go only to the notification center. Check it in Settings > System > Notifications > Notifications from apps and other senders by selecting the app.

Read it again after it's gone

A longer banner doesn't help if you're away. Banners that disappeared can be read in the notification center (Windows key + N), but once they leave it they can't be brought back.

NotiRewind saves the notifications that reach the notification center on your PC. Open recent notifications in full from the tray icon or with Ctrl+Alt+N, including text that was cut off in the banner.
